What is Taping / Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio Tape®, also called Kinesio Tex Tape, is the original elastic adhesive tape developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979.

Kinesio Tape is latex-free, hypoallergenic and wearable for days at a time. It is safe for everyone from elite athletes, general gym users through to medical patients.

Kinesio Tape alleviates discomfort and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting effect forms convolutions in the skin thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation, reducing pressure while enabling a more effective flow of blood and lymphatic fluid in and out of the target area.

Based upon years of clinical use, Kinesio Tape is specifically applied to the patient upon their needs after evaluation. The findings of the clinical evaluation or assessment dictate the specifics of the Kinesio Tape application and other possible treatments or modalities.

With the utilisation of single strips or modifications in the shape of an “X” or “Y” or other specialised shapes as well as the direction and amount of stretch placed on the tape at the time of application, Kinesio Tape can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce inflammation, prevent injury and promote good circulation and healing, and assist in returning the body to homeostasis.

What can Kinesio Tape be used for?

EVERYDAY USE FOR WORK, FOR LIFE, FOR PLAY

Although originally developed for medical use in things such as Lymphedema, for many years Kinesio Taping has assisted individuals of all ages to find comfort in their daily activities.

Kinesio Tape is widely used for general day-to-day functions to help office workers, bus drivers and other working professionals with the day-to-day repetitive strains within the neck, back and hands caused by long hours at computer desk or in a seated position. Whatever your ache or pain whether it starts in the neck or in the foot, Kinesio Tape can be the difference between getting up ready for your day ahead or getting up dreading your day ahead.

FOR MEDICAL USE FOR THE MORE COMPLEX ISSUES

As you may see in the media, the athletic uses of Kinesio Taping are well-noticed and extensively photographed but it is in fact the medical field that Kinesio Tape was created originally for. As part of an overall medical approach to patient care Kinesio Tape is used widely in helping reduce pain and inflammation as well as assisting muscle development and function to further progress a person’s rehabilitation following surgery or other medical interventions.
